AI Search Visibility: GEO, AI Overviews and ChatGPT Search

Improve AI search visibility with a practical GEO guide: technical access, quotable content and brand signals for Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT search.

· 7 min

More people now get answers from Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT search, Perplexity or Gemini instead of scanning a list of links. That has put AI search visibility on every marketing team's agenda. This guide explains Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), how it relates to classic SEO and what you can realistically do today, without the hype.

What GEO is and how it differs from SEO

GEO is an umbrella term for making your content usable as a source in AI-generated answers and making sure your brand is described accurately there. You may also see it called AEO or LLM optimisation.

The key point: most AI search systems find current web pages through a search index when building an answer. Google's AI Overviews use Google Search; other tools rely on their own crawlers or shared indexes. So GEO is not a replacement for SEO but a layer on top of it. Google itself states that no special optimisation is required to appear in AI Overviews beyond normal SEO best practices.

AspectClassic SEOGEO

FoundationCrawlability, relevance, authorityThe same, plus explicit and verifiable facts

Technical access comes first

  • Server-rendered HTML: key content should exist without JavaScript, because some AI crawlers render it poorly or not at all.
  • Deliberate robots.txt choices: user agents such as OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended serve different purposes; some fetch for search, others for model training. Blocking training is not the same as opting out of AI search.
  • Speed and reliability: slow or error-prone pages hurt every crawler.
  • Structured data: Organization, Article, FAQ and Product schema clarify entities and relationships.

Proposals like llms.txt are circulating, but it is not an established standard and major search systems have not confirmed using it. Adding one is harmless; just do not put it at the top of your list.

Write content that can be quoted

  1. Question in the heading, answer in the first sentence: phrase H2s and H3s as real user questions and answer directly underneath.
  2. Self-contained paragraphs: each section should make sense out of context.
  3. Definitions, lists and tables: comparisons and step-by-step processes are easier to extract.
  4. Original information: your experience, process and clear opinions are what nobody else can supply.
  5. Visible dates: show when fast-moving content was last updated.

Brand authority across the web

AI systems describe your brand using more than your own site.

  • Keep your company name, services and location consistent across your site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and directories.
  • State clearly on About and service pages what you do, who you serve and where you are.
  • Contribute genuinely to industry publications, events and communities.
  • Find and correct sources carrying outdated information about you.

When several independent sources agree on a fact, AI systems tend to use it with more confidence. Conflicting details can lead to wrong answers, or to your brand not being mentioned at all.

Where to start: a practical roadmap

  1. Baseline: list 15 to 20 questions customers ask about your services, ask them in several AI tools, and note whether your brand appears and whether the details are correct.
  2. Technical check: review robots.txt, server-side rendering of key pages and your structured data.
  3. Clarify core pages: state plainly on About, service and contact pages who you are, what you do and where. Vague slogans are vague to machines too.
  4. Answer the gaps: for questions your site does not yet answer, publish direct, experience-based articles.
  5. Repeat: rerun the same questions every few months to track change.

Almost every step also helps classic SEO, so the investment holds up even if AI search evolves differently than expected.

Measuring AI search visibility

Measurement is still immature and there is no real "ranking" to track. Useful signals include referral traffic from chatgpt.com or perplexity.ai in analytics, Search Console data (AI Overviews appear within overall web search reporting), and periodically asking your target questions in several AI tools to record whether and how your brand appears. Answers vary by user and time, so sample regularly rather than relying on one-off checks.

Frequently asked questions

Will GEO replace SEO?

Not today. Most AI search systems reach web content through search indexes, so SEO fundamentals like crawlability, relevance and authority still apply. Think of GEO as a layer on top of that foundation.

Do I need special markup to appear in Google AI Overviews?

Google says no extra optimisation or markup is required. A page needs to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in Search.

Should I block AI bots in robots.txt?

It is a business decision. Some bots crawl for search features and others for model training, and you can allow one while blocking the other. Check each bot's documentation before deciding.

Can anyone guarantee my brand will appear in ChatGPT answers?

No. AI answers vary by question, user and time, so no one can guarantee inclusion. What you can do is make your content accessible, clear and trustworthy to improve the odds.
